Where are the Lofoten Islands?

At the top of Norway, there’s a stunning section of islands that make up the Lofoten Islands! While it’s quite a remote part of the world and not the easiest to get to, it’s well worth the trip! Full of huge, stunning mountains, ocean, and beautiful beaches, the Lofoten Islands in Norway is unlike any place I’ve ever been.

Major Cities around Lofoten:

The Lofoten Islands are full of small fisherman villages, but some of the larger or more well known cities are these:

Leknes
- Probably the closest major city to the island section visitors would visit! This has more shops and a small airport.
Svolvær
- While a little further from the main touristy section of the islands, this has a larger airport that more tourists would fly into
Hamnøy
- This is a very small fisherman village; however, this really well known for it’s iconic red cabins right on the water with huge mountains behind them!

How to Travel Around The Lofoten Islands

The Lofoten Islands are not as easy to get to as a major city like Paris or London. Most people from the states will have a connecting flight in Oslo or another major European city, then multiple short flights to the top of the country before having to drive for a bit or take a ferry. The islands are so worth the trip though!

Major Airports around Lofoten:

Here are a few of the airports you’d want to fly into as your last stop before your drive! Most of these will have a connection from Bergen, Oslo, or Copenhagen. Using local airlines like Norwegian or Wideroe are your best bet since “Bodo” doesn’t usually just appear on a google flights tab.

Leknes | 1 hour drive from Hamnoy
Svolvær | 2 hour drive from Hamnoy
Bodø | 3.5 hour ferry + 20 minute drive to Hamnoy.

How to Travel Around The Lofoten Islands by Car

Traveling by car is necessary in the Lofoten Islands. Expect your first rental option to be a manual, you may be scrolling to find an automatic option since it’s Europe! Norway is also mainly known for having lots of electric cars. The country is pretty well set up for electric cars, so don’t be afraid to rent one! The cars usually have a charging cable in the trunk (where you’d expect a spare tire to be) and are fairly easy to charge. Expect hotel chargers to be super slow, like over 16 hours to fully charge. Going to a super charger is your best option and most rental companies expect the cars to have 80% battery upon return.

The Lofoten Islands in Norway have some of the most breathtaking landscapes! Situated at the top of the world, the islands are full of huge mountains, quaint fishermen villages, and beautiful ocean landscapes.

The Lofoten Islands are perfect if you can’t choose between beach or mountain vibes! This region has both and everything in between! It’s not as hectic as other spots in Europe since it’s a bit more remote, but it’s really easy to get around. There are so many great locations for photos and elopement activities that are either a pull out or a short walk from a parking lot. There are also plenty of hikes if you want more isolated and stunning views, but you can’t go wrong at any location in the Lofoten Islands.

Best Time of Year to Get Married/Elope in The Lofoten Islands, Norway

The Lofoten Islands in Norway is such an interesting part of the world to visit! The daylight hours range drastically from summer to winter. This far up, Norway is known for midnight sun in the summer and no light in the winter! Doing a bit of research about the daylight hours and average weather for a spot this far North is crucial for planning your elopement!

Norway Seasons & Weather

Summer in Norway: Summer is stunning and amazing for hikes, swimming, and other outdoor activities! During the longest days of the year, the sun never sets. While it’s not great for your sleep schedule, I like to think it could be an advantage for your elopement day! Everyone else is asleep, but you could have a private ceremony at 2am at an iconic location with no onlookers and great lighting!

Winter in Norway: While Norway is completely dark for a period of time in the winter, you can see the Northern Lights! It’s great for winter sports, dog sledding, snow shoeing and more! I don’t recommend eloping during this time since there’s no light and it gets quite cold! If you want to avoid the midnight sun, eloping during the fall could be the best of both worlds since you get a full night’s sleep and the Northern Lights can be seen!

Best Locations for Your Lofoten Islands, Norway Elopement

The Lofoten Islands, Norway is picturesque any way you look! Any of the pull outs or hikes are guaranteed a good view! Here are a few of my favorite spots around the Lofoten Islands!

1. Lisardø Nøwy Viewpoint, Å

This viewpoint is a short walk to the oceanside! There’s also an easy walk up to another overlook surrounded by lush green mountains and a lake! This is great for diversity in your gallery in one location! Å is at the end of the road on the Lofoten Islands and there’s a large parking lot for visitors!

2. Hamnøy Viewpoint

The Hamnoy viewpoint is the iconic photo you think of when it comes to The Lofoten Islands! Little red cabins, a stunning ocean, and huge mountains! The viewpoint exactly may not be the best for an elopement, but the area around it is great! Just across the bridge is a small pull out where you can get closer to the water and be surrounded by green grass with the mountains in the distance!

3. Kvalvika Beach

If you’re looking for a bit more of a hike on your elopement day, Kvalvika beach is a stunning location that’s about a 2.2 mile hike round trip. There is quite a bit of elevation gain since we’re hiking over mountains, but the view is absolutely worth it! The best thing about doing a small hike is we can take photos along the way and this trail is great for getting a ton of diversity in the gallery! You can explore the beach, exchange vows, then head back!

4. Flakstadbruene

This pulloff location is beautiful for some sweet photos with this big, pointy mountain! I loved the little field to run around in, and the water is more inland so not as rough in photos! I love using easy pulloffs for elopements, especially if you’re not keen to hike a long ways!

5. Haukland Beach

This is a stunning, easily accessible, white sand beach close to Lekens! This location is surrounded by big mountains that you can see out into the water! There’s also a path if you want to do a small hike to get some more elevation. The beach also has a small cafe to grab a hot drink and a pastry if you want a break!

How to Legally Get Married in Norway

Getting legally married in Norway can be a bit tricky for foreigners. I always recommend going through the legal process in your home country to avoid the extra paperwork and language barriers! Lots of couples will do the legal process at home and then come abroad to do all the fun ceremonies! This usually makes your time more fun and relaxing because you get to prioritize the activities you’d love to do and not have to coordinate multiple vendors.

Eliassen Rorbuer Cabins

The most iconic little red fishermen cabins! Stay in the iconic part of the Lofoten Islands! These cabins are so cute, have multiple beds, a kitchenette, and stunning views of the landscape. Onsite is a fish and chips stand and cafe! There’s also a little town around the corner for more food options and a market 10 minutes down the road for more food options.

Modern Cabin in Ramberg

This cabin is a modern, open space with stunning views of the landscape! There’s plenty of beds if you have some friends or family joining you, a sauna, and more! This is perfect for getting ready photos around the property and a small elopement dinner to celebrate! Ramberg has a larger grocery store, coffee shop, and is in the heart of all my favorite locations to explore!

The Famous Yellow House

This sweet house is perfectly composed with the mountain behind it and is one of the most photographed houses in Norway! The house is available to rent and has two double bedrooms. The interior is nicely decorated and it feels like a warm, traditional Norwegian house. It’s also in the heart of Lofoten and within driving distance of so many iconic locations!

7-Hour Elopement Timeline — Lofoten Islands, Norway

Season: Late spring to early autumn (May–September)
Base Location: Reine or Hamnøy (centrally located + insanely scenic)

3:00 PM — Getting Ready at Your Cabin (1 hr)

Morning slow start — coffee on your private deck overlooking the fjord.
Getting-ready photos with the mountains reflected in the windows.
Write or read your vows privately before seeing each other.
Photographer captures:
- Dress & detail shots (rings, bouquet)
- Partner tying tie / doing makeup
- Emotional “gift exchange” moment

4:00 PM — First Look + Portraits (45 min)

Location: Hamnøy

First look on a quiet dock with peaks all around you.
Take a few portraits wandering through the fishing village and bridges.
Quick drive to a lookout point for more epic couple shots.

4:45 PM — Scenic Drive + Mini Adventure (45 min)

Route: Reine → Haukland Beach (~45 min drive)

Stop along E10 highway for cinematic roadside portraits — the light here is incredible.
Grab local snacks (Norwegian chocolate, dried fish, or cinnamon buns).
Listen to your shared playlist and enjoy the slow drive through fjord country.

Optional pit stop: Nusfjord, a UNESCO fishing village with colorful cabins.

5:30 PM — Intimate Ceremony by the Sea (45 min)

Location: Haukland Beach

Exchange vows barefoot on the sand or atop a grassy dune.
Include a handfasting or letter-reading moment.
Champagne toast or local sparkling cider after the kiss.

Add-on idea: Have a small picnic setup with local cheeses, berries, and bread.

6:15 PM — Post-Ceremony Adventure (1 hr 15 min)

Option 1: Hike to Offersøykammen viewpoint (moderate, 30–40 min up)
Option 2: Explore tidepools and rocks at Uttakleiv Beach

Take adventurous portraits as the light softens.
Pause mid-hike for a toast or to read letters from loved ones.
Capture cinematic, windswept shots on the ridgeline.

7:30 PM — Sunset Picnic Dinner (1 hr)

Location: Cliff above Haukland or private beach nook

Pre-packed picnic basket with:
